The rat is a recurring character in this book-length suite of poems on memory, art, and grief—a figure that is always lurking just out of sight; ready to chew through your wires, leaving crumbs of evidence behind to suggest that something has been adulterated, might still be leaking. Before writing this particular excerpt, I had taken a tour of a whiskey distillery and learned that all spirits have heads, hearts, and tails—the heart being the tastiest, most desirable part—which seemed to have something to say about the human spirit as well.
