JERICHO BROWN

Duplex

︎

The duplex is a form I invented. It's a fusion of the sonnet, the ghazal, and the blues. The video was taken in my den, which I'm mostly excited about because growing up I never imagined living in a space that afforded for two living rooms, one of which middle class folks like to call a "den."

Jericho Brown is the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, and the National Endowment for the Arts. Brown’s first book, Please (New Issues 2008), won the American Book Award. His second book, The New Testament (Copper Canyon 2014), won the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. His third collection is The Tradition (Copper Canyon 2019). His poems have appeared in Buzzfeed, The New Republic, The New York Times, The New Yorker, The Paris Review, TIME magazine, Tin House, and several volumes of The Best American Poetry. He is an associate professor and the director of the Creative Writing Program at Emory University.

Epithalamium

︎

This poem was written for my brother’s wedding. I was also in love at the time and didn’t have to look far for inspiration. The recording was made on the farm grounds connected to Mount Saviour Monastery, where I was attending the Orein artist residency.

--
Alex Morris hails from Mobile, Alabama and received his MFA in poetry from NYU. He worked for New Orleans Review and McSweeney's Poetry Series, and his poems have previously appeared in DAY ONE, PHANTOM and Everyman's Library pocket anthology, Monster Verse. As the Reverend, he hosted the Southern Writers Reading Series at Happy Ending Lounge. He lives in Brooklyn.

Alternative Facts

︎

"Alternative Facts" is a post-Trump poem about disorientation and reorientation. It is a love letter to consequences—the desire to feel deeply, to be felt, no matter the cost. It's also an asymmetrical mind map that renders the artificial (synth) and the real (vulnerability) indistinguishable. This poem-film was shot at the Bridge Street playground near my house in Northampton. The setting seemed appropriate for a poem about Space Camp. Unbeknownst to me, my niece was picking flowers nearby. When she handed me a dandelion—totally unscripted—the poem came alive in a new way. Recitation became an incantation.

Margot Douaihy is the author of Scranton Lace and Girls Like You, both published by Clemson University Press.

ANAIS DUPLAN

Two Poems from Mount Caramel and the Blood of Parnassus

︎

None of the poems in my chapbook Mount Carmel and the Blood of Parnassus have titles. They run together. I recorded a short section from the beginning of the chapbook in my room because it is quiet and I feel safe there. Many of the poems in the chapbook are about childhood, a time when safety was a foreign concept to me!

--
Anaïs Duplan is a trans* poet, curator, and artist. He is the author of a forthcoming book of essays on black art and creativity, Blackspace (Black Ocean, 2019), a full-length poetry collection, Take This Stallion (Brooklyn Arts Press, 2016), and a chapbook, Mount Carmel and the Blood of Parnassus (Monster House Press, 2017). His writing has been published by Hyperallergic, PBS News Hour, the Academy of American Poets, Poetry Society of America, and the Bettering American Poetry anthology.

JOHN SIERACKI

The Cleaning

︎

“The Cleaning” contains a collection of images, imaginings, and happenings I experienced one day about a month ago. I felt extremely lucky that day: that I could get my teeth cleaned, that I could travel safely through wilderness, that I had loving friends, and that I could imagine so much more than I could perceive. It hasn’t always been that way, and who knows what the future holds.

--
John Sieracki can be found in Amherst puttering around, writing, acting, cooking, biking, trail-running, and raising money for Mass Humanities. He received his MFA in poetry from UMass Amherst where he read for jubilat for several years. He’s a member of the Connecticut River Valley Poets Theater (CRVPT).
